Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for ship loading operations
   • Access, interpret and apply ship loading operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify, address and report potential hazards to personnel, infrastructure, vessel and the environment
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Operate ship loader and associated equipment
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up, shut down and secure equipment procedures
   • Coordinate activities with others prior to commencement of, and during the work activity
   • Operate and control ship loader functions
   • Load ore in accordance with ship’s hatch loading plan
   • Act or report on monitoring systems and alarms
   • Complete the work plan within the operating capacities of the ship loader
   • Carry out reporting and complete and process documents
3. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Prepare machine for maintenance
   • Conduct inspections and fault finding procedures
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
   • Return machine to service
   • Process written maintenance records
4. Carry out housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process written records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete ship loader operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating to confirm work requirements

demonstrates completion of ship loading operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

operating and controlling ship loader controls functions

loading ore

complying with ship’s hatch loading plan

conducting equipment hose down and chute cleaning

performing housekeeping activities

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting ship loading operations through:

data entry computer based system

accessing, interpreting and applying technical information

accurate record keeping

relevant operational and maintenance procedures and associated documentation

site and equipment safety requirements and procedures

ore type and quality

environmental requirements e.g. dust suppression and constraints related to ship-loading operations

impact of ship-loader operations on customer quality requirements

impact of ship-loader operations on vessel loading specifications

layout of vessel and potential structural hazards
